Inspired by The Singh Twins’ artwork Arts Matters:The Pool of Life, 2008. This artwork which is currently on display at the Museum of Liverpool, is one of two works commissioned as part of the official celebrations of Liverpool’s status as European Capital of Culture in 2008. It presents the city as a world stage at the centre of the creative Universe showcasing it diverse cultural offer of world class museums, galleries, performance spaces and festivals to an international audience. Dominating the stage are three female figures, which reinterpret Raphael’s ‘The Three Graces’. They symbolise the famous architectural ‘Three Graces’ of Liverpool’s waterfront – namely, The Liver, Cunard and Port of Liverpool Buildings. Together they hold up and present what in 2008 became Liverpool’s ‘Fourth Grace’ (the new Museum of Liverpool). Each of ‘The Three Graces’ attire (from left to right) is made up of imagery representing Performance Art, Visual Art and Sport respectively.
